[Correspondence] High-temperature tolerance of bat and pangolin sarbecoviruses versus SARS-CoV-2
Abstract
Understanding the mechanisms underlying host adaptation in emerging viruses is essential for future pandemic preparedness. Data published in 2021 suggest that thermosensitivity influences the viral fitness of SARS-CoV-2 in humans,1 with later omicron subvariants (eg, BQ.1.1) showing lower replication at elevated temperatures than earlier strains (eg, Delta and BA.5).2 The later-emerging strain of the omicron XBB variant, EG.5.1, showed enhanced spike–angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 interactions at lower temperatures than earlier omicron XBB subvariants (eg, XBB.1).
