[Comment] Genotype-based antimicrobial resistance tests need a new regulatory framework

Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is eroding the effectiveness of antibiotics and raising the cost of incorrect empirical therapy. Sequence-based diagnostics that infer antimicrobial susceptibility from pathogen genomes promise faster, more tailored prescribing than culture-based susceptibility testing,1 especially for slow-growing pathogens (eg, Mycobacterium tuberculosis), infections for which susceptibility testing is rarely done (eg, Neisseria gonorrhoeae), and common pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus.
